A campaign is aiming to propel a traditional song from Palestine to the top of the UK charts. The campaign seeks to send support to communities in Gaza while also highlighting Palestinian culture and creativity.
Renowned figure Brian Eno, who contributes to the track, stated that the release called 'Lullaby' represents a opportunity to show solidarity with Palestinians over the Christmas period. He noted the potential for an unlikely festive coup.
“It would be incredible if that happened, yes,” he commented. “I won't be completely disheartened if it doesn't manage to, Christmas singles are a thing unto themselves.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who performs on the version of a folk song called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the piece's powerful central theme.
“The song holds a very special place for a lot of people,” Barghouti shared. “The message is that I would prefer a dignified death than exist without freedom. That’s the main theme of the song; we seek to lead a life of dignity that we are entitled to as Palestinians.”
The track was produced in the wake of a large-scale benefit event held in September. Initially planned to be done as a live recording, the piece was omitted from the lengthy event due to scheduling overruns.
The notable list of performers appearing on Lullaby includes a group of prominent voices from the music world. All took part in the benefit event, which successfully generated a considerable total for charitable causes.
Lullaby was brought to life by a group of music creators. The song showcases a combination of the traditional Arabic lyrics with new English lyrics.
The organizers behind the project have stated that their aim is to generate maximum funds for a dedicated fund. These proceeds will be distributed to Palestinian causes through an established charity.
“We don’t have a specific target,” a figure said. “We aim for whatever we can get. Naturally, the more the merrier. All proceeds are directed out to those in need in Gaza.”
The situation in the area was characterized as its extreme devastation, with a overwhelming percentage of property reportedly levelled or seriously harmed.
“Against that backdrop, a handful of millions won't make an enormous impact. But I think what does make a difference is above all making this cause better known and proving the human dimension of the story.”
The single 'Lullaby' is launching on Friday. Additionally, a full recording of the solidarity show will be made accessible to view on a major video platform from mid-December.
