NYC's current mayor Eric Adams declared his decision to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.
Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, calling him a āsnake and a untruthful personā and alleging of having āa career of marginalizing Black political contenders.ā Nonetheless, in a new statement, Adams changed his position, revealing he now intends to appear with Cuomo in communities where he maintains strong support.
āIt is crucial to mobilize the communities of color that have experienced urban displacement on how critical this race is,ā the mayor stated.
The mayor further explained, āResidents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and Iām going to go to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and Iām going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.ā
The election battle has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest worldwide and represented aspirations for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.
During a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and Republican nominee his conservative opponent announced they would decline Adamsās endorsement if offered.
Months ago, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.
At an separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams responded to journalists asking about the support announcement by stating, āIāll be with Andrew later today.ā
The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
