As I walk into the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to victory and earning best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. He admits a need to temper his aggression, having been shown red at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. He is frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the main top prize in the future.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
