Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist ā known as a scientist and civil rights advocate ā was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
āI told her my depression might last for years,ā she recounted in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
āI did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,ā she wrote. āA month laterā¦ I had to hang upā¦ because I could not speak through my tears.ā
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement ā including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her roots ā was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose support were her lifeline. āYour support rescued me,ā she said.
She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The group of women also featured experts in various fields.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
