The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits The Beloved Duo Against a Digital Device
Exactly 30 years since the first Toy Story movie was released, establishing the animation giant as a leading animation studio and bringing audiences to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but keeping viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang
The preview shows the young girl — who received the toy collection when he left for college — getting a latest toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and helping giveaway items locate loving owners.
Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before setting off for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser shows the insignia attached to her outfit.
Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
