NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, did not confirm he would live there immediately after his electoral win in November.

"This decision rested on the security of my family and the importance of directing all of my focus on enacting the agenda for affordability voters elected me on," Mamdani said on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.

"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, the community will forever remain a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

Political Debate

During his election campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

However his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents consider these apartments crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
