The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
